5G technology is making its way to Colombia. On Thursday, December 5, the ICT Ministry published the final 5G Plan, which establishes the path for the development, deployment, and operation of this technology in all regions of the country.
Among the steps to follow is the identification of the required spectrum demand in the frequency bands below 1GHz, 1-6 GHz and above 6GHz, taking into account all the needs of the use cases that may arise; conducting the pilot tests; promote the updating of public policies and the regulatory framework for the implementation of this technology and identify the digital security guidelines.
“The 5G Plan is a commitment of the Government of President Iván Duque, which will allow the country to be at the forefront of technology, incentivize all productive sectors of Colombia with new applications and uses, as well as benefit Colombians who increasingly demand more speeds of download and new productions of ideas that boost the growth of citizens, ”said the minutes.

According to the Ministry’s schedule, the plan will begin with the identification of the radio spectrum needs and the resolution of frequency band release. This will take place in the second quarter of 2020.
At the time of this identification, the first 5G pilots will be carried out in the regions of the country, and that will aim to test the technology, identify the best uses, services, and applications adapted to the needs of Colombians, as well as the inputs for the technical determination that facilitates the arrival of such technology.
“With these pilots, we will be able to obtain preliminary information that facilitates the design and structuring that enables the deployment of 5G technology, as well as testing and encouraging a way for Colombians to access, for example, augmented reality applications that will allow them to enjoy cities, concerts, and artists on the other side of the world in real-time and with the highest possible quality, ”said ICT Minister Sylvia Constaín.
Following the calendar, in the third and fourth quarters, the call will be held to promote the development of applications or cases of use of technology in the country, as well as the consultation of regulatory adjustment needs.
Finally, in 2021 the analysis of the administrative mechanisms of the frequency bands will be carried out and in the third quarter, the allocation of the 3,500 MHz bands is planned.
